Jamie and I are safe in Bangkok, had no problems in the airport, and have purchased our flight tickets to Mumbai. We head to Cambodia (Siem Reap) tomorrow by bus. We shall see if our choice to bus vs fly was worth saving $400... There are so many buses to pick from, but we've read that some of them try to scam you at the border into paying extra visa fees and such. So we've tried to pick the one that seemed less scam-ey :) It may be a rough ride but we will get to see more of the countryside this way. Ahhh it is good to be traveling in Asia again!
Our plane itinerary to/from Mumbai is
Bangkok to Mumbai on Thai Air Dec 19 @ 6:45pm
Mumbai to Bangkok on Thai Air Jan 14 @ 11:35pm
It is nice and warm here, and I am eager to get to Siem Reap and out of Bangkok. It's hard to notice any political craziness going on, as the city is a wild, glittering, bustling jungle of bodies and vehicles and temples anyway... and for convenience we are staying off of Kao San Road, which is extra hectic. Thought of Harborview today when we saw a woman on motorbike get hit by a bus. She seemed miraculously o.k. Visited the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha, now going to go get a cold sweet treat and do a little fun shopping before we turn in for the evening.
Will write from Cambodia... with news on whether the 10 hr bus journey was a nightmare or a good way to see the countryside. What's a trip to Asia without crazy bus stories anyway? It is good to be out of my comfort zone again and breathe in the colors and sounds of another universe. Strange that we are half a world away from Seattle.
